The first book we studied was 1 Kings. I studied the life of Solomon. At the beginning of his reign he faced many challenges. He was king over a numerous people. He was the second king and would thus establish policies and procedures that would influence the people for generations to come. He was also a young man. Solomon turned to the Lord at this time. 1 Kings 3:6-7 states,
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
I cannot imagine the overwhelming feelings of inadequacies that Solomon must have felt. He says that he felt as a child. He asked the Lord for the gift of an understanding heart so that he could guide his people with wisdom. He knew that he could not do it on his own. I think at times that we can feel so inadequate in life. We see all of the weaknesses that we have and how we cannot measure up to the assigned task. We can follow the example of Solomon by going to the Lord and acknowledging our weaknesses. We can go before Him and asks for gifts that will enable us to fulfill the tasks we are given in life. We are never left alone to fulfill tasks in life. He is there as we turn to Him for help. This week I want to turn to the Lord and ask for His help in overcoming my weaknesses.
