As part of my studies at Brigham Young University-Idaho, I have the privilege to take religion classes that delve into the scriptures. This semester I have the incredible opportunity to study the second half of the Old Testament. I am so excited to be able to study this book of scripture. I have read it previously but I feel that this semester will be different. The focus of this class is to seek and find the symbolism that point us to Christ. Every book of scripture is meant to help us to understand the role of Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer. I look forward to further understanding my relationship to Him. In order to draw nearer to Him, we have been given the assignment to select an attribute of Christ that we would like to develop. We are to study the Old Testament to help us understand this attribute. I made this a matter of prayer and feel that I should study humility. When I hear the word humility, I automatically think of someone who does not have pride. In the past week, I have to learn that humility is so much more. In preparation to read the book of Kings, I read a definition of humility so I would understand what I want to mark. I turned to Preach My Gospel and studied a section on humility. It states,
Humility is willingness to submit to the will of the Lord and to give the Lord the honor for what is accomplished. It includes gratitude for His blessings and acknowledgment of your constant need for His divine help. Humility is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of spiritual strength. When you humbly trust Him and acknowledge His power and mercy, you can have the assurance that His commandments are for your good. You are confident that you can do whatever the Lord requires of you if you rely on Him. You are also willing to trust His chosen servants and follow their counsel. Humility will help you as you strive to be obedient, to work hard, and serve selflessly.
I realized that humility is a belief that one can succeed in all tasks and assignments as one turns to the Lord. It comes as one seeks His counsel. It is one who pleads for help to face the challenges of everyday life. It is complete surrendering to His will with a knowledge that He knows all things. This semester I will look at the lives of men and women in the Old Testament to study how they humbly submitted to the will of the Lord.
I will mark 1. The tasks or assignment they were given. 2. The
challenges they would have to mount. 3. The specific things they did to put
their trust in God. When was the moment that they gave everything to God? 4.
How they pushed forward with faith in Christ trusting in His mercy and grace.
5. The way the Lord aided them. 6. The
impact that experience had on them as well as others. I will put this information in a notebook. Each of the 6 steps will be colored so that I can identify the process. Each week I will share what I learned through the lives of the men and women. I will share my experiences in becoming more humble.
